Thought of the Day: man. or butterfly.

The great sage Lao Tzu, also known as Laotse, the forefather of Taoism (a “brother” of buddhism), once told a story of a man who awoke from a very strange dream. In the dream, the man proclaimed he was a butterfly, flying from flower to flower, enjoying all the scents and sounds and sights a butterfly would enjoy. The man regrets having to wake up from such a wondrous dream. Lao Tzu then proposes the thought, what if the man is dreaming he woke up? What if the dream is not of the man being a butterfly but of the butterfly being the man?
Segue into thought of the day: man or butterfly, how do we know what is “the truth”?
How do I know that, this blog, this “life” i lead, isĀ not really some elaborate dream and I am just really “involved”? I mean, that can happen in dreams right? The sensation of touch, smell, sight?
There are some dreams we can never forget because of certain images, sounds, physical sensations, etc…so if we can experience the 5 senses in the dream world, as short-lived we may think we actually exist in that realm, whats to say that we actually left at all?
It’s something to think about.
You’ll notice a pattern coming up in my thoughts of the day, very existentialist, i apologize but i believe i did establish that beforehand, so please excuse this existential ranting, hope you find it somewhat interesting
.
Not knowing if you living in a dream world or the “real” world (if there is such a thing!) is a very scary thought to think, you thunk?
Again, if you can experience the 5 senses in the dream world, whats to say what is real?
Anything/everything we touch, smell, see could just be in our imaginations!
The philosopher Descartes once said, “I think, therefore I am”. His argument was that even though his senses may lie to him as far as what is “real” and what “is not”, the ability to think, his consciousness, is the solitary piece of evidence that he exists and is the absolute truth in a world full of deceit.
Another philosopher Kierkegaard destroys this argument later, saying we cannot even depend on the conscious as the basis for our existence/truth, and yet another philosopher..and another philosopher..so on and so on..
Wouldn’t that be somethin’ if the world was “inverted”? I mean.. I know I have some preeeetty weird dreams. I mean just the other night i was fighting a talking black cat…iii’m goin’ to pray that was all a dream, i don’t know if i’m prepared to deal with that as a reality!
So before you go to bed tonight, chew this thought around in your mind..sweet dreams.
